What is the Platinum Rule?
We all know the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” which teaches us how to treat others with respect and consideration. Sometimes, however, it doesn’t go far enough, because it’s self-referential. The Platinum Rule, “Treat others the way they want to be treated,” expands the Golden Rule by teaching us how to recognize and respond to the needs of others. In these changing times—politically, socially, ethically, and denominationally—practicing the Platinum Rule is more important than ever. It empowers us to truly love our neighbors as ourselves by recognizing the inner divinity of each person we encounter.
