Was Jesus a Jew or a Christian? The Historical Answer — and Why It Matters

by | Oct 21, 2025 | 117 comments

Jesus was Jewish.

He was born Jewish, lived as a Jewish rabbi, taught from the Hebrew Scriptures, and died as a Jew. His disciples were Jewish. His earliest followers were Jewish. Christianity began as a Jewish renewal movement within first-century Judaism.

Understanding this historical reality clarifies both the origins of Christianity and the ethical foundation of Christian leadership today.

When I ask leaders, “Was Jesus a Jew or a Christian?” responses are mixed. Many assume “both.” Some hesitate. But historically speaking, Jesus was Jewish. Christianity did not yet exist during his lifetime.

Why does this matter? Because forgetting Jesus’s Jewish identity distorts theology, weakens ethical leadership, and fuels harmful divisions.

Was Jesus Jewish? What the Historical Record Shows

Jesus practiced Judaism.

He:

  • Worshiped in synagogues
  • Observed Jewish festivals
  • Interpreted Torah as a first-century Jewish teacher
  • Engaged in rabbinic-style debate

After his death, his followers continued practicing Judaism for decades. The early Jesus movement was understood as a renewal movement within Judaism — not a separate religion.

Only gradually did Gentile inclusion reshape the movement into what became Christianity.

Christian faith did not replace Judaism. It emerged from it.

Was Jesus Opposed to the Pharisees?

A common misconception is that Jesus stood against “the Pharisees.”

Historically, the Pharisees were a lay renewal movement focused on ethical practice, holiness in daily life, and faithful interpretation of Torah. Their aim was to bring spiritual depth into ordinary living.

Jesus operated within this same renewal conversation.

The debates recorded in the Gospels reflect internal Jewish disagreements about interpretation — not a rejection of Judaism itself.

Seeing Jesus as anti-Jewish is historically inaccurate and theologically dangerous. He was participating in renewal, not launching a new religion.

Christianity Began as a Jewish Renewal Movement

The earliest followers of Jesus did not abandon their Jewish identity.

They:

  • Continued observing Jewish customs
  • Gathered for prayer and teaching
  • Interpreted Scripture through the lens of love of neighbor
  • Practiced radical generosity and ethical accountability

This is how renewal movements begin — by deepening commitment to core values, not discarding them.

Christianity’s roots are grounded in Jewish ethical teaching, including the command to love one’s neighbor and pursue justice.

Why It Matters Today

Forgetting that Jesus was Jewish has real consequences.

When Jesus is portrayed as standing against “the Jews,” it fuels anti-Semitism and reinforces divisive narratives.

More broadly, when reform movements position themselves as morally superior rather than rooted in shared ethical foundations, polarization deepens.

Jesus modeled renewal from within tradition — not destruction of it.

Leaders today face similar challenges: how to engage necessary reform without demonization, how to pursue justice without abandoning humility. In Creating a Culture of Renewal®, we help leaders move from fear-driven reaction to courageous, spiritually grounded action.

Renewal requires remembering our roots.

What Leaders Can Learn

If Jesus was a Jewish reformer participating in a renewal movement, faithful leadership today includes:

  • Engaging tradition thoughtfully rather than rejecting it reflexively
  • Practicing courageous ethical clarity
  • Avoiding tribalism and dehumanization
  • Anchoring reform in love of neighbor

The earliest Jesus movement expected transformed lives. It practiced spiritual formation through relationship, immersion, and shared accountability.

That model remains powerful.

The Bottom Line

Jesus was Jewish. Christianity began as a Jewish renewal movement. That historical truth strengthens theological clarity and ethical leadership.

When we remember our roots, we recover our responsibility — to justice, humility, and the repair of what is broken.

Renewal does not begin with separation.

It begins with returning to the heart of our faith.

I think Jesus followed God’s law and tried to correct man’s (pharisees or jews in general) poor interpretations through his teachings, parables, and lifestyle.

If Karl Marx corrected the jews for not being proper communists, they would have killed him also.

Jews are filthy Christ deniers and terrorize the world following the one that kills, steals, and destroys. Pedophilia and homosexuality is rampant amongst them because they walk under the curse they choose in life.

Yes, Jesus and his earliest followers were Jews. I would have liked to have heard more about those implications for his own context from your own Jewish background. – The attempts to create parallels to today’s political environment was very distracting in trying to understand the original setting. Why he did what he did, and said what he said, at his own time in terms of the Jewish political and religious setting would have been more interesting and helpful to me since I teach doctoral students in a Doctor of Ministry program.

I gave up reading the article when you mentioned postdoctoral work.

The hole problem with the faith of Christianity is that Jesus never created it and secondly Matthew quotes Isaiah 7:14 as a prophecy of Jesus that is a mistake because if ya read the book of Isaiah chapter 7 from the beginning and read the hole chapter in context then Matthew and Jesus being the son of god and then calling him god and worshipping him is completely wrong because even Jesus said there is only one god there is only one good, he said to worship the FATHER, so the question is who is the father and why would he say that because he would be everyone father yvwh

YeHoshua Hamashiach was born of the tribe of Yudah, typical Jewish. Circumcised on the eighth day according to G-d’s covenant sign with Avraham ; dedicated to Him when He was 12 years; observed all Jewish feasts and festivities including Hanukkah; was in deed a Pharisee, but a best of them, He even pointed out …If your righteousness does not surpass that of the Pharisees you can ad well forgive to inherit the Kingdom of G-d; when He met the Samaritan woman at the well He averred salvation only come from the Jews; He never chose a gentile as His first disciple who became apostles; He never attended Sunday worship as most of us do today; He never advocated change of Sabbath to Sunday as some of us have had been wrongly taught; He had never been a Christian, for sure He transcends Christianity; He never broke the Torah, in fact the opposite is true, and even warned if anyone breaks one and teaches others to do so will be called the least in the Kingdom. By the way, He had never been an American, British, or an African; He was a Jew, an Asian origin by nature, by the plan of our Creator. To consider Him as a founder of Christianity is fallacy, because, in real sense He never founded any religion, rather than being the true Foundation of true faith in the Creator who appealed to Father Avraham, Yitschak and Yacov. YeHoshua Hamashiach never introduced new religion, never brought new Scriptures, but He came to fulfill them. I heard someone criticizing the Jews that they failed to fulfill the Great Commission, yet the very Bible he was preaching from is Jewish; Shaul the apostle who probably over half of the New Testament was a typical jew; yes, him who enlightened us the gentiles was Jewish.
So, what is the moral of the story?
Grace, grace grace of the Lord must be valued, we are grafted in the Jewish solely by His grace; we are no longer foreigners, but partakers of the blessings of our Creator through the Savior YeHoshua Who as a Jew.

Why did Jesus allow the attempted annihilation of Jews? He performed miracles. Why do so many still try to annihillate the jews? Even now that they have their own country why doesn’t God protect his people? They are continuously being persecuted. Every country seems to not like jews?

This is an uneducated question. He was a Jew by lineage. The Jewish religion was the Law of Moses, which Christ fulfilled and then taught Christianity, which was the higher law. Before Christ taught this, it didn’t exist or at least wasn’t understood.

I’m still wrestling with the curses God through Moses spoke about in Deuteronomy 28.
God was very precise about the curse upon the Isrealites, Hebrews or Jewish trubes who were disobedient! When did this change? When God gave the Jewish people another High Priest named the Messiah?
    Another Temple which is Christ?
How does the Old Testament fulfill the Bew Testament? Moreover how does this play into eschatology?

I am Roman Catholic and the Sabbath is still Saturday. We go to mass on Saturday evening at 6:45pm. Remember whether Roman Catholic or Protestant we are still one Christian family. Believe it or not Protestants. You still follow a lot of Catholic beliefs and you don’t even realize it. Remember the only way to heaven as a Christian iss through the blood and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Good works and charity is part of salvation s s Christian believer. You can’t continue to sin and expect to go to heaven. And remember mainstream Christian religion has been created by man and change to suit man’s needs. No Christian faith is correct we re all guilty of sin, so why judge other fits. Can’t we all just get along. Isn’t this world hard enough.? Right now, the devil has control over the christian church until Christ return on judgement day. So please stop arguing over religion, and practice love thy neighbor as their and be a good Stewart if charity for the less fortunate. Think you and God bless everyone.

They will finally believe He is the Messiah during the Tribulation and the 2 witnesses on the wall preach the gospel to the whole world , with miracles and supernatural power . They are killed and their bodies will lay in the streets for 3 days , until they are resurrected . Then the Jews will believe in Jehovah and Jesus as Massiah.

Also, no where in the Word does it say God changed the Sabbath day as it is the ONLY day He blessed—not Sunday, not Monday, etc.
Man created Sunday; however, we are still supposed to obey ALL Commandments.
It’s rare to find a church that obeys the Commandment concerning the Sabbath.

Yes the Sabbath was Saturday but there is nothing wrong in worshipping on Sunday. No where does the bible insist on a particular day of worship. Christians also have weekly meetings. Our Lord Jesus was raised on Sunday. Also, all days belong to the Lord. He is the one that created all days.

From teachings from a Messianic view point the gentile believer became a Safardic Jewish decent. This is what is being taught. For instance the story of Jesus Yeshua and his disciples was walking along in a field and the disciples and Jesus took handsful of grain to eat. In the orthodox sect was stricter in customs and practice. It’s not bad to be strict just harder for new comers to adhere the laws soo quickly. Soo what Yeshua was teaching was probably from one of the 2 schools at that time. The one that believed it was ok to pick grain on the Shabbat. We are taught in our days to be Safardic. You learn at your own pace. We don’t lean everything right away . It makes since that Jesus did it that way. The information is in the Mishnah in the oral law between the 2 schools. Reading a little Mishnah every day you will pick up on these teachings. Thanks and Y ah bless you all.

The two schools of thought that were extant at the time were what we would call the liberal school (Rabbi Hillel’s group) and the conservative school (not sure which Rabbi led this school of thought.) The liberal school was that which was looser interpretations. The conservative school was more stringent and strict. At times Jesus was aligned with the liberal school, and at times the conservative school. Good lessons for us today!

Jesus and the Pharisees were very much alike. What’s pictured in the Scripture is what is called Halacha debate: Argument for the sake of heaven, which isn’t to “prove” who’s right and who’s wrong but to deepen understanding of God. Too bad most Christians think it’s a wast of time to see Jesus though the lens of the Hebrew bible, and study rabbinic literature. Nothing, nothing at all that he said or did was revolutionary. It was all firmly writing Jewish praxis.

The point is not whether Jesus was a Jewish or Christian, it is that Jesus is the Son of God who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virginia Mary. Jesus was God in the flesh. He was crucified, dead and buried. He arose physically from the dead and sits at the right hand of God the Father in heaven. I agree that the blame is not the important thing. The death and resurrection of Jesus is the basis of our salvation.

I think to call Jesus a Jew at birth and at death (which infers Judaism as his religion) is misleading since Judaism does not believe that Jesus is the Son of God. I think it’s more accurate to state that he is of Jewish descent, but he died as a Christian.

Jesus did practice the Jewish faith of Judaism. Judaism was the original faith that was awaiting the Messiah. The fact that they did not recognize him when He came, does not make it less so. Also, the rejection of His people, does not make Jesus less Jewish. Another thing to keep in mind, there were Jews that did receive Jesus as Messiah and still kept practicing their Jewish faith. Just like in Christianity, there are different denominations, Judaism also has various sects. There are sects that do not believe that Jesus was the Messiah, but there was a sect that did, and they were called the “Sect of the Nazarenes” which included the 12 disciples and Paul. It was from this sect that Gospel was proclaimed to the Gentiles. The word Christian, meant to be a follower of the teachings of Christ.” Jesus was the teacher and therefore could not be a follower of himself. This word was given to His followers by the Roman/Greek people of Antioch. Neither Jesus nor His Apostles, ever called themselves that. Also, Christianity as a religion did not start until much later. This is all supported in scripture.

Let’s not forget that the followers of Jesus were first called Christians in Antioch Acts 11:27. Does it matter what name we or other people tag on us? No, it doesn’t; instead, it is crucial that we believe that Jesus is the Son of God sitting at the right hand of the Father and that all must put their faith in him. Jesus said in John 14:6; I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me. No, man can be saved without repenting of their sins and placing their trust in the blood of the lamb of God. Now, the Jews rejected their Messiah and the Torah because the Torah spoke about Jesus. Like Jesus said, those who keep the scriptures are the Children of Abraham, and those who don’t are not the children of Abraham. So, that’s why the only loving thing for the followers of Jesus to do is to persuade the blood Jews to believe in Jesus, who came for every person in the world. So, I agree with you that Jews don’t need to take on the name Christian, but they need to believe in Jesus the Son of God!

Its principles revolve around grace alone, faith alone, and Scripture alone (Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Sola Scriptura), emphasizing that salvation is a free gift from God received through faith in Jesus Christ, with the Bible serving as the ultimate authority. Key aspects include a belief in the Trinity, the real presence of Christ in Holy Communion, the importance of baptism, and a calling to serve others as a natural response to God’s grace. Google it and decide for yourself. God’s peace be with you.

The Religion of the times was Judisum , I was taught Jesus was born from a woman named Mary as the Son of God predestined to fullfill a propheficy (sp) that he brought a new system called Christianity and needed to fullfill a proheficy (sp) the Jewish do not recognise Jesus as the son of God but a Prophet , and helped condem him to death fueling the events that led to his crucifiction that was meant to be to fulfill his time on earth , I just wish he would return NOW !!!

Christianity means to be like Christ. To be Christ-like. So, you would follow the things Christ did. Like: going into the Synagogue every Sabbath as was His custom. To be Lord of the Sabbath.

God did not send Mohamed. He was a false prophet and God never sends false prophets. The Old Testament was written before the birth of Christ and the New Testament was written some time in the first century A D. Jesus is the Christ and the Son of God and Savior. He is both God and Man. He was crucified, died and was buried. The 3rd day he rose from the dead. Forty days later he ascended into Heaven. He will come again in glory to judge both the living and dead. On that Pentecost the Holy Spirit was poured out and people who came to Jerusalem to celebrate this feast heard the disciples proclaim the deeds of God in their own language and 3,000 came to faith in Jesus as the promised Messiah that day. Today is Pentecost for us Christians.

Jesus brought a new revelation to Jews in how to worship God. He never stopped being a Jew, but He instructed on true and deeper worship, like healing on the Sabbath, personal responsibility for salvation, loving your enemies and greater concern with what comes out of your mouth than what goes into it.

Jesus died as a Jew at the hands of the Romans – many Jews were crucified by the Romans

Early followers of Christ as a prophet were Jews

Christianity as a separate religion didn’t begin until about 300 years after his death when he became deified at the conference of Niciae

Jesus was 100% a Christian. We can not bend the truth just because others fear antisemitism. And if you are a true Christian saying the truth doesnt set up a darn thing pertaining to violence or pit one against the other. Only actions can bring on harm.
Btw what harmful actions are we seeing in the holyland today and by whom? Killing children is the worst perversion against God himself. End of discussion.
        See below quoted.
“When Jesus is seen as a Christian who stood against Jews, especially Pharisees, it sets up an ugly “us vs. them” dynamic between Christians and Jews of today. If we forget that Jesus and his movement were primarily Jewish, then Jews become the enemy of Christianity, or those who must be converted to, or simply ignoramuses. These attitudes are dangerous. Violent anti-Semitism is on the rise worldwide. Hurting or killing Jews in the name of Jesus is the worst perversion of Christianity.

        I respectfully disagree.

And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. [21] Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. [22] Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

This is exactly what this article is aiming at & you have not one correct idea here. He is from the people who WAIT for the Messiha. He was not called Christ in his lifetime. He SAID I DID NOT COME TO END THE LAW, BUT TO CLENSE IT. HE DIED A JEW, KILLED AS A MINOR NUISENCE BY THE ROMANS & YOU INSULT HIM DEEPLY BY DENIEING HIS FAITH & HIS ” RACE” & HIS CULTUTE. Pdrsonally.i believe he would have no idea how you can try to desyroy his entire life’s teachings. He spent his life wanting a more decicated life for ALL JEWS to be HOLY go G-d..sick comment, totally against Rebbe JESUS !

Jesus was not a Christian. The word Christian is mentioned a few times in the Brit Hadasha (New Testament). The word was attributed for disciples of Yeshua (Jesus). Jesus abided by the Torah, taught the Torah, and celebrated and obeyed the Torah as no one has ever done.

Jesus was and is Jewish. The Roman Empire killed Jewish and Non Jewish disciples of Jesus, then appropiated the faith in Jesus and created Nominal Christianity, a false form of faith.

The point of recognizing Yeshua’s Jewishness and learning more about it is to better understand the context of what he was saying. You cannot really understand the majority of his teachings if you remove them from their original Jewish context. Christianity now believes Jesus took away the sacrifices, is anti torah, anti jewish, moved the sabbath from Saturday to Sunday, and completely removed the festivals (appointed times) that God gave us himself in Leviticus 23 that give us an outline of who messiah is and what he came to do and we’ve replaced them with Christmas and Easter. Read your Bible and see who the one is that is “the lawless one who is without torah”, the one who persecutes the Jews, changes the times and seasons, and removes the sacrifices from the temple… It’s the false messiah. Paul went to the temple and paid for sacrifices for himself and some other gentlemen after taking a nazarite vow, this was AFTER he became a believer in Jesus as the messiah and 20 plus years after his death and resurrection. Read it in the book of acts.

I found your comments informational, until you got to the comment about Christianity now believes, you kinda of lost me not All Christians believes Jesus took away sacrifices, are anti Torah, believes in/or celebrate Pagan holidays, such as Christmas or Easter, not all Christains are anti Jewish, and although it’s known that the Sabbath is Saturday not Sunday some choose to keep Sunday Holy and rest, for various reasons (work, Sunday church service, ect. ect). As per your comment I found it very informative and well said/written.

He was the son of God born into a jewish family. He was raised a Jew, had a bar-mitzvah, educated in the writings of the Torah and kept all of the Jewish customs and holy days. He was 100% Jewish and knowing his lineage is important because if he hadn’t been born from the line of David then he could not be the messiah the prophets of the Old Testament spoke of.

Jesus was born Jewish and observed all of the Feasts : since He was the fulfillment of each one . He is still Jewish and He will be for all eternity. He is called the Lion of Judah . He will rule and reign from Jerusalem during the millennium. Jesus is our Rabbi. There is no reason to deny the Word of God in regards to Jesus is Jewish.

In true Judaism before AD 70 patriarchat existed and son could not be considered “jewish” of Judaism if his father was not Jewish of Judaism.
Jesus’s father was GOD. The God was not Jewish therefore Jesus as a son of God was not Jewish.
Matriarchat and RABINIC Jews originated in AD 70 when the 2nd Temple was destroyed and at that time you were Jewish if your mother was Jewish.

Not quite true. Most ancient cultures, including Roman and Jewish, believed the child followed the mother. The reason was pragmatic … they knew who was the mother but could not know for certain who was the father (DNA tests not yet having been invented). On the other hand, power and wealth were generally, but not always, patriarchal.
